“Street Cat” came into my home

In 2014-2015 I had a series of unfortunate events take place. They all happened at our home in a very nice neighborhood that had never had problems before. Our home had never been broken into before. As you’ll see at the end it all comes together, but I’m still not sure if I was ever in any danger or not.

In the fall of 2014 when it got darker earlier my husband and I started coming home around 4:30-5:30. My husband would usually be home first, and then I would come home about 30 minutes later. I remember one day I pulled in my driveway. I saw a guy walking down the street. There was nothing unusual about that. We live in the city but have a lot of trees and wildlife, and it’s not uncommon to see people walking their dogs, walking alone, or just walking their kids to school. I pulled into my driveway and walked in the front door, and it was open. I thought it was weird but didn’t think much of it. I entered my home and called for my husband. He wasn’t home yet. I checked all the doors and they were all locked. I went back to the front door and it was open again, except this time the screen door was open too. It was storming that day and super windy so I figured it just blew open. I remember walking into my home and calling out for my husband but he wasn’t there. I turned my back to close the front door, and that’s when I heard the noise. It sounded like someone was opening one of our windows. I turned around to see our blinds shut but fluttering like the wind was blowing them like that. I was so scared I didn’t know what to do. I knew my husband would be home soon and he could check things out.

When he got home he said he hadn’t opened any windows and checked for signs of a break in. There were none. He thought maybe the wind blew the blinds open and that was it.

Fast forward a few weeks: it was a weekend, and my husband was playing video games in the living room. I was in the kitchen making food when I saw a black cat walk into our living room. I called out to my husband to look at the cute kitty. Then suddenly the kitty darted into the hallway and into the room we use as an office. My husband went into the room and said “where’s the kitty” and I replied that it was in there with him. He looked all over and couldn’t find it. Suddenly he said he found it hiding under the desk. Well, that was weird. I went into the office and looked under the desk and couldn’t see a cat. My husband said he was playing with it and then it darted under the desk. I told him he must have imagined it. Then I looked around and noticed the blinds to our office window were open. I was positive that we closed them. My husband said he hadn’t opened them. The window was closed, but we never leave the blinds open. Then it hit me that the cat was probably just a hallucination and someone had been in our home.

The final event happened again on a day I came home before my husband. I again pulled into my driveway and saw a person walking down the street. This time it was a woman. I walked into my home as usual and called for my husband. He wasn’t home. I thought that was weird since we usually walked in the door around the same time. I texted him asking when he was leaving work. He said he already left. I texted back “well I’m home. Where are you?” Then he texted back that he wasn’t in the office today. He was working out in the field. I was confused. When he called me I asked him what he meant by “out in the field”. He said he was doing an inspection on some property for an upcoming project. Even more confused I asked why didn’t he tell me he wasn’t coming into the office? He said he did. I know for a fact he didn’t tell me. I remember him specifically saying he was going into the office that day. I asked him to remind me again when he told me he wasn’t coming into the office, and he said he told me that morning. We have a routine every morning where we both get ready for work at the same time. We don’t go to work at the same time, but we both get ready at the same time and leave at the same time. It’s always been like that, and it’s just something we both do instinctively. So I don’t know what he was talking about. I don’t remember him telling me that. Could I have just forgotten? I don’t know but it’s still weird to me. I dropped it with him and continued to get ready for the rest of my day and get dinner started.

That evening we talked about everything that happened since the fall. The first time the front door was open, the time I heard the blinds opening in the office, the time I saw the imaginary cat, and the time I thought he came home when he didn’t. He said he never came home that day. Then we remembered that he usually comes home before me since I have a commute and he doesn’t. So if he was going to come home early, he would be the one to come home first, not me. We both have the samelocks on our cars and house key. There’s no possible way he could get into the house if he didn’t have his key. We have hide-a-key outside and even if he used that for some reason, he still wouldn’t be able to get into the house if he didn’t have his car key which doubles as his house key. Then we remembered that the imaginary cat was black, and there was a black cat that would roam the neighborhood. People called him “street cat”. He was a sweet kitty but belong to no one. My husband remembered that the day he said he came home, he actually petted that black cat. That wasn’t weird since we both pet street cat when we saw him. But it was weird that street cat was in our house and he could have swore I let him in. I know for a fact I didn’t let him in. I don’t know if street cat was getting into our house somehow, or if someone was getting in and bringing him in with them.

That’s it. That’s all that happened. Even thinking about it now I’m not sure what exactly was going on. Was someone breaking into our house? Or is it just all a big weird coincidence? I still don’t know. But Street Cat, let’s not meet again.
