# 1. Open the textbook.
# 2. Turn to the chapter you want to read
# 3. Read the chapter title
# 4. Scroll down to the short 6-10 word title for each section, and try to memorize them.
# 5. Now read the 4-5 sentence summary of the entire chapter at the end.
# 6. Close the book

Congratulations, you've finished reading the chapter. The 5,000-7,500 words that were in the chapter are not necessary. You won't need to know any specific details, only the overall structure of the chapter, which you've memorized.

Now sit for your test.

This actually works surprisingly well. I worked as a tutor for most of my college years for various subjects. I didn't need to read the chapters of the text book myself before tutoring because I could simply read the chapter headings and read the summary at the end of the chapter to fully understand the chapter, and deliver it to my students.

Part of the reason this works is because it makes you think critically. Knowing the 6 word section headings, you can deduce what the flow of the chapter is. Knowing the summary at the end, you know what the take away message is.

This works surprisingly well for many subjects, but I don't know if it will work for every subject. For example, while working as a tutor, I noticed that my boss actually knew the entire text book from memory, having read it multiple times. He was a physics tutor. I couldn't do that. But for most other subjects, this method is sufficient.

Try this method for a month or a semester, and then tell me of your results.

This method only works for written and online text books, and not audio books.
It is not recommended to read in this way for books that you are supposed to read for fun, only for school.

Happy studying!
