My brother has been working for a large silicon valley based tech company for 5 years. The work environment is extremely relaxed, which he loves. There is no dress code, you can bring your dog to work, 80% of the people wear oreo boots and hoodies. Most people play video games at their desk during work hours and the company does not care. There's a lot of opportunities for career growth, so he can be a specialist in one area and pick up new skills and move into a completely different field. This company is paying him excellent money and has matching 401(k).

However, my brother is constantly complaining about the company's engineering practices. The story goes a tech lead wanted to give some royalties to one of the company's software developers, so they gave that developer something called "IP" credit, which is basically a pot of money used to pay that developer if the software generates a profit. The problem is that this tech lead did this repeatedly over the years to all his favorite developers. From what my brother is telling me, it's incredibly difficult to get IP credits unless you are in a very select clique.

My brother is extremely angry that the company is giving this money to developers that aren't doing anything and taking it away from the developers who are actually doing the work. He thinks this is grossly unfair and they should either give IP credits to the people who are doing the work, or just abolish it altogether.

My brother was offered IP credits but he turned it down. He said accepting it would be a conflict of interest and he's just spitballing here, but he thinks they offered him the credits because they want him to be beholden to them because they are planning on squeezing more and more work out of him. He also thinks the tech lead is a terrible engineer who keeps writing broken code and will never change. Everytime my brother tries to bring this up, it seems like the tech lead just gaslights him and tells him he is being paranoid.

What should my brother do? Should he just ignore this problem and continue on with his career? Or should he bring this up to corporate?
