What's the point of Bernie Sanders?

I think Bernie Sanders is a good guy and I partly agree with the policies he wants. The thing is, he will never get elected and has never been elected president. So all these years of him running for president, and years of him talking and giving speeches on the senate floor(for twenty years) have accomplished nothing. I think if he really wanted to help he should run for governor because he's from a state that's easy to win over and he'd almost certainly win that election.
