What exactly do you do when you "workshop" a story?

I'm getting ready to join a creative writing workshop class, and I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I've written a few creative stories in my time, but I've never had a "workshop" on any of them before.

I've done peer review with other students, where we'll read other people's work, and then we'll all share our thoughts about it, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing. When you "workshop" a story, do you actually sit down with other people and go over it with them? Or do you, like, submit it to a panel of judges to be critiqued?

Any help would be great. I just don't want to walk in blind, and then find out that I was supposed to do some step that I totally missed.
