There are fewer hours in the day than most people think

Back in the 60s my Oma went to night school to be a nurse. She learned a method for budgeting time that I've been making good use of lately in my life. I'm not sure what the original name of this technique is, or how to find information on it, but it really helps me keep perspective on how to allocate my time. If anyone has any info on the history of this trick I would love to hear it.

The basic idea is to assign each hour of the day a number. The hours you are sleeping get a “1” next to them, and the hours you are obligated to be doing something other than self-directed activity get a “2.” The hours that are left over are your “free time” and get assigned a “0.”

The idea is that your “0” hours are what you have to work with. If you want to make time for something new, you have to find room for it in the zeros. I’ve been finding it really helpful lately to see very clearly laid out how much time I have available to me on a given day. I have no idea why counting up the zeros makes it feel so much more real, but it does.
