So this is a story from my childhood that I remember every night whenever I lay down in bed to sleep. I know that I have to let go of it and move past it, but somehow I never seem to be able to. I've wanted to write this story for a very long time but until now I've always found myself unable to share it with anyone.

I was 10 years old that I had to stay in a hospital for observation because I had severely broken both my legs in an accident. The day it happened, I remember being super fucking upset at the fact that I had to spend the last two weeks of the year in a hospital.

I was allocated a three person room and from what I've seen of it so far, I'm the only person to be occupying it right now. I was sharing the bathroom with two other patients from the room next door, an elderly man and a woman in her thirties. I was pretty depressed at the state of my life now, and I had spent most of my time in the hospital sleeping.

One night, I had woken up to use the bathroom. I made sure that no one was in it and hobbled towards it. I didn't bring my crutches with me because I was certain that no one would be there at that hour. I slowly made my way to the bathroom, not wanting to wake anyone up, when I suddenly heard the door click. I stopped where I was, thinking it was the lady from next door. When I looked back at my room, I noticed a man standing there. He was tall and wore a hospital robe, staring at me. I froze, wondering who it was and what he was doing in my room.

When he noticed me looking at him, he started to walk towards me. He had a very strange gait, almost as if he was a robot. His movements were stiff and jerky, but still very calculated. I was too stunned to move, too stunned to call for help. He had walked up to where I was standing and was making his way to the bathroom. As he passed, he grunted and I felt a cold sweat run down my body. I was frozen in place as he walked past me. I was able to snap myself out of my trance when he walked past me, and my first instinct was to run back to my room.

As I ran back to my room, I heard him scream very loudly in the bathroom. I didn't stop running even when I heard him stop screaming. I reached the safety of my bed and called for help using the nurse call button. I was so scared, I didn't know what to do. After a couple of minutes which felt like what seemed to be an hour or so, a nurse came into the vicinity. She knocked on the door and asked if I needed anything. I told her what happened, and she was very calm about it. She said she would check it out and walked away.

I didn't sleep that night. I was terrified to go to sleep, and every single noise I heard I thought was him again.

The next day, I asked the lady from the next room why the man in the hospital robe was in the bathroom at the same time I was. She told me that no one from her room used that bathroom. We were all confused.

From that day on, I never took my crutches anywhere. I had it always in my hand everywhere I went. I never went to the bathroom alone, even at night. I always asked a nurse to accompany me.

I never saw him again, but I never felt safe again either.
