Is suicide an inherently rational choice?

The thought of suicide is not new. In Plato's Phaedo, Socrates argued that based on the social contract people are obligated to accept death by execution when condemned by their home state, in some cases suicide should be considered the right thing to do. So, if you believe in the social contract is suicide the most rational option given certain criteria? What criteria must be established to suggest that suicide is the most rational choice?
