Another short story in a world I am building. Let me know if you see anything you dislike about the story. I have also posted the first two stories in this world in the comments section. (The Woods. and Vipers Nest.)

The kidnapping was a blur. I don’t really remember it.

I was only nine years old at the time.

I remember that night.

One of my best friends in the world, Courtney.

We had snuck out at dusk. Courtney hung out in my room often, but never at night. It was always before sundown. She wasn’t supposed to be out after dark. Especially not in the city. So we had to be careful.

Her mom did flips if Courtney was out after dark. It wasn’t worth the punishment. She spent most nights at my house, though. Her parents and mine were old friends, so it never felt strange.

We left my house, creeping through the alleys. I had a spare key on hand in case we decided to come back through the alley, but we didn’t need it. My bedroom window had a screen I could kick out easily, and the tree beside it was accessible to climb from the ground.

We didn’t have anywhere in mind to go, we just wanted to be out. It was a beautiful day, though. The weather was perfect, the sun was down but had left a beautiful glow behind it. There were some clouds, but they were spread out enough that we could still see a stars beginning to show. So we decided to go to the park. We didn’t have a plan, so we just figured we’d change into shorts and walk over, then decide from there what else to do.

We made it to Courtney’s house and snuck in easily. Her mom and dad were big drinkers, and her mom was already passed out for the night. We just had to wake up her dad to get her to go back out.

I slammed the front door. Her dad jumped. He looked around, confused. He opened the front door and came out. We were already at the corner. He called out to us.

“Hey, you two! What are you doing out this late?”

“We’re going to get ice cream and see a movie at the theater.”

I said.

“Alright, be careful. You know the way. Don’t stay out too late, though. Your moms won’t be happy if they find out.”

We both said our goodbyes and took off in a sprint. We ran down the block, laughing. Slowing down when we got to my house, not wanting to wake up my parents.

We went to my room and changed into shorts. It was already dark out by this time, but we still walked to the park. There was a Dairy Queen right beside the park. We got ice cream and headed to our favorite table.

We sat on the table, hanging our feet off the edge.

We got quiet after a while and just looked up at the stars. It was a beautiful night.

The sky was filled with stars. The moon reflected off the water of the park’s pond. It was perfect. I felt happy. Just relaxing with my best friend.

I don’t know how long we stayed there, but we figured we had stayed long enough.

We both agreed to go home and watched TV.

We had snuck out before, but it was always in the evening and we always ended up back before dawn. We didn’t want to chance getting in trouble this time.

We both stood up, throwing away our ice cream wrappers.

That was when it happened.

Courtney was gone.

I looked around the park. It was empty. The parking lot was filled with cars, but no one was around. The only person I saw was a woman with long silver hair walking by. Her eyes sparkled as she passed.

She smiled, then walked on. Disappearing into the darkness.

I started to scream.

“Courtney!”

I stood up. I started to run around the park. I looked around frantically. She was nowhere to be found.

I started to cry. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. We were alone. We had snuck out. If I woke anyone up, I would get in trouble. I had to find Courtney.

I started to run. I didn’t know where I was going. Just that I had to find her. I had to look.

I will never forget the horror that gripped my heart that night. We were best friends. She was more than a friend. She was family, and I had lost her.

I don’t know how long I looked.

I don’t know where I was.

The next thing I remembered was coming to in a bed. It wasn’t my bed. I was groggy, but still had tears in my eyes. I didn’t know where I was, but suddenly I did.

I remembered Courtney.

I sat up in the bed and screamed.

“Courtney!”

A woman came in. Her long silver hair was tied up in a ponytail in the back of her head. Her bright blue eyes locked onto mine. Her smile lit up the room.

I remembered the woman from the park.

“You’re okay. You are safe.”

She said. “Would you like to see Courtney?”

I nodded.

The woman smiled and left the room. A minute later Courtney came in. Her smile lit up the room.

“I’m sorry. I feel so bad. I was kidnapped and put in a locker. When I finally got out, I couldn’t find you.”

Courtney said.

I hugged her.

I held on tight. We never spoke of that night. It was as if it never happened. But I will never forget. It changed me. I realized how easily I could lose everything. Everyone I loved.

But we both had to grow up. We both had to get strong in case something like that ever happened again.

I didn’t realize how much I loved her until she was gone.

I didn’t realize how much I hated the kidnapper.

I didn’t realize how much I loved the woman with silver hair.

I didn’t realize how much I hated the world until that night.

I’m glad our kidnapper made that choice. It made me the person I am today.

I didn’t know at the time, but I would have my revenge, and it would be sweet.

But that's a different story.
