What did Japan think of AKIRA?

I'm seriously wondering how this movie did there. A few questions I have:<br><br> 1.Most of the people here aren't aware of the existence of this movie.<br> 2. Most of the people who are aware of it, aren't aware it's anime.<br> 3. I know some people have enjoyed it, but I have heard a lot about how poor the quality is. Am I missing something here?<br> 4. Why aren't there any memes about it? This is Japan we're talking about here. AKIRA is severely lacking.
