Amazon has confirmed it will cut 18,000 jobs globally, including at its UK business, in a fresh round of redundancies across the technology sector.

The cuts are coming in its corporate business, with Amazon's retail business remaining untouched, the company said.

In a statement, CEO Andy Jassy pointed out that the job losses were a small fraction of the company's global workforce, which consists of over 840,000 full-time employees.

"We expect to eliminate approximately 18,000 roles – positions that we will no longer need. Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means that there will be more role eliminations as early as 2023 as each of the businesses will continuously review priorities and make adjustments," Jassy said in a statement.

"I didn't choose this reality, and I'd vastly prefer we weren't the company that has to lean into it so aggressively."
