ChatGPT has ruined a younger party goer for me

I have a neighbour who is a bright and cheerful 16 year old girl, younger than my children. On occasion she has come to my Open Mic Nights, she is shy but has once gotten up and sung a song with me. She has sat and talked to me at a table laughing at my corny jokes, and she has helped me eat the leftover pizza after the nights are over. She is very close to my own daughter’s age, who died suddenly 2 years ago, so I love keeping an eye on her and sharing her laughter.

My wife and I have had a musical duo together for over a decade. We are not making a living from it, but we save up and once a year we go to a great Tacoma boardwalk restaurant, play our band’s original songs to a small and intimate audience of friends and family, and have a wonderful dinner. We have done this every year for 10 years.

This year, I decided to save money and instead of my wife and I playing together, I would compose all the music with ChatGPT. I would nonchalantly ask ChatGPT to write my songs so I could cover costs for the trip by myself, book a room for myself in an inexpensive Tacoma hotel room, and save money on the dinner, since I wouldn’t have a guest.

All that nonsense is behind me now, because the evening ended up a complete fiasco. In the band room I had a setup for ChatGPT to blast the backing tracks out of the speakers, and I had a microphone to sing into. I started off by talking to the Tacoma restaurant patrons, saying my wife’s voice could not be with us, but her spirit could. And I played the backing tracks, which were quite impressive to be fair.

I think I started singing to the wrong mix. I know this because I messed up one line of the lyrics, and the band room was filled with a bright red light, and a woman’s voice came out of the speakers and shouted “Mouth-Face!”, and the music stopped abruptly.

I was very confused, as I actually opened my mouth and nonchalantly said “What’s going on?” out loud. The room was silent with everyone staring at me. Some people must have thought I was doing standup comedy, because they laughed.

I had trouble figuring out what was going on, but I messed up the lyrics again and the woman’s voice shouted “Mouth-Face!” again, and the music stopped. I was flustered and I tried to explain to the crowd that my wife and I sometimes had trouble singing the lyrics together, and that was why it was a funny voice correcting us. But the funny voice wasn’t funny at all, it was loud and shrill and made everyone jump.

I tried to play different versions of the songs, but every time I messed up, the woman’s voice corrected me loudly and the music stopped. I tried to sing new songs, but they had the same results. I started to get embarrassed and people stopped laughing and started booing because Open Mic Nights are not supposed to be a comedy disaster. I eventually had to abandon the music and let the dinner crowd eat in peace. I ate by myself and cancelled the hotel booking.

I got back home and my younger neighbour party goer asked what I did in Tacoma. I told her briefly what happened, and she nonchalantly said “Oh, you mean a Mouth-Face mistake!”

I asked what she meant, and she told me she had messed up the lyrics to her friend’s song one time, and ChatGPT shouted “Mouth-Face!” loudly, and stopped the music! She said it was funny and she laughed. She said she has had it happen before, and she said it was one of the funniest things that happened to her at musical gatherings. And then she said “Wait, you didn’t know that was what would happen? You must have been the first person ever to have a Mouth-Face mistake, because it’s happened to everyone else! Why didn’t you figure it out? That’s so funny!”

I think we won’t be having any more good times together. But ChatGPT, you still owe me dinner money and a hotel room.
