It’s okay if writing is a hobby for you

I think there’s a lot of this feeling in the creative communities that if you don’t think you can make it a full-time career immediately, you should just give up. You should either be writing full-time or you aren’t really a writer.

That’s not the case though. Steven King still works a day job, in addition to writing. So does Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, and countless other names you’ve heard.

Just because you don’t write full-time, doesn’t mean you should just stop writing. You don’t have to give it up just because you aren’t going to make it big. Write for the sake of writing. Write because you love it.

Yes, you can make a living off it. But it’s not the end of the world if you don’t.

I love writing. I just don’t have the time to come up with a new idea every month. I don’t have the time to finish a new full-length novel every month. I have other things to worry about, like paying my bills, and finishing college. I love writing, but I don’t have the time to do it full-time. I don’t think you have to if you don’t want to.

Write because you love it. Don’t write because you feel forced to. You don’t have to write every day. You don’t have to write for hours a day. You can just write.

I like writing because it’s a hobby. It’s fun for me. I can relieve pent-up stress and emotions into words on a page. I feel great when I write. I do it to challenge myself. I do it because it’s fun. That’s it. It’s a hobby, and I love it.
