Have you ever found yourself turning a piece or section of writing into something personal for yourself?

By this, I mean to say that you've treated a piece of writing that you are supposed to be critiquing like it was your own piece of writing. If you're a frequent writer, you know what I mean. Sometimes when I am working on a piece or section of writing, I don't think about anyone else reading it. It is selfish. The writing is personal, and usually I find I turn out more creative work when I do things this way. I don't think about anyone reading it, and it takes on a form that is just for me. I feel that if I can get something to be more personal, I can make it better and more creative.

The other day I was critiquing a piece of work and I took a rather different approach to critiquing. I treated it as my own piece of work. When I did that, I found myself to be more inspired in critiquing and I was able to come up with ideas that I otherwise wouldn't have. Not only did I find that I was on a roll with critiquing and that it was more enjoyable, but it actually felt like I was working on my own piece of work. I was able to come up with ideas and suggestions that I wouldn't have come up with otherwise.

I think that sometimes we all tend to forget the beauty of writing. It is a great way to express ourselves and I think we all forget that from time to time. When I keep myself in the mindset of the writing being for myself, I have found that I am able to be more creative and make the work better. It doesn't matter if I am critiquing work, writing for a class, or simply writing for myself; I find that if I make it personal, I have a better time and make better work. I guess this comes from the fact that writing is a form of expression. If I want to get something across, I have to make it personal. Not only does it make the work better, but it makes it more enjoyable for me as well.
