Is this the moment we can begin to stop writing websites like it's 1980?

Over the last couple of years, I've posted and commented here with this question. To me, it seemed like we **should** be in a position where we can total, 100%, completely stop creating websites like it's the 90s.

And I believe now, we're at that point.

We can stop creating websites that work like this, right? We can stop making websites that act like it's 1980 and the web can accommodate the latest and greatest versions of everything, can't we?

I'm not saying that we should stop making websites that function across a range of devices, or we should stop using progressive enhancement. But, as a developer, I truly believe we're at the point where the web can actually accommodate 100% modern websites, and we can completely stop going back in time.

**edit:** To clarify, I'm talking about websites made for the general public. Not for particular industries such as finance, government, etc.

**edit 2:** I get that the web never changes, but isn't now at the point where we can just disregard older versions of things? Allow the web to accommodate the latest versions of different software and get away from thinking that we need to make sure our websites work on whatever old versions of things people have.
