I was deported from the United States, now I’m fighting against illegal immigrants coming into my country

No, I’m not a hypocrite. I was 4 years old, and had no control over myself. Peaceful protests are taking place across my country and there’s growing support about closing the border.

I’m not going detail what “country” since this is the first I’m sharing this. I had no idea until I became an adult and started asking questions, about well, why am I here and not there? Why does my birth certificate say this when my passport says that? My mom came clean to me about how we were deported, and how she made up a life here. Why she did it doesn’t matter, and I don’t blame her for it either. We live pretty well, not rich but better than average. I’m studying law at a university and things are working out pretty well.

The truth is that I’m glad I’m here, in my home country. I’m much better off than I would have been elsewhere. I’m not the type of person who just lets things happen to me, and I have to take matters into my own hands. There are a lot of immigrants in my country, nothing new, but recently it’s more than ever before. It’s not the „they’re taking our jobs“ type of situation, but more of a „where did all these people come from?“ kind of thing. Our country is very big, but also very sparse. It doesn’t have a lot of resources, but we do have a lot of empty land.

Illegal immigrants came to our land and set up tents and camps. The government didn’t know what to do with them, so they did nothing. They didn’t have any documents or any ID, they didn’t speak our language. So they just...let them be. Nothing was really a problem until they started getting bored and coming into the cities. They started taking jobs under the table, stealing, robbing houses, etc. Nothing extreme, but enough to be noticeable.

So people on the internet started talking and spreading awareness. It gained traction, and last night there were protests in many cities. A few were violent, but most were peaceful. They were all about how we want to close our borders totally, to immigrants and refugees.

I know it sounds hypocritical, I get that. But I wasn’t given a choice to leave, what’s happening to me country now is.

This has to stop. I don’t want my country to become a shelter for people who have nowhere else to go. It’s nothing against immigrants, I just want to protect the place I call home.

I know some people from other countries might see this as a crazy, right-wing thing. That this is horrible and inhumane. But I don’t care. I’ve never felt this way about my country. I’ve always been proud of it, but also detached. But now I’m standing up to protect it, along with many others.

Since I’m studying law, I know that legally speaking closing the borders is not that simple. But we’re determined to make it happen, no matter what.
