I'm writing this as a last resort. My husband is away, and I'm not sure what else to do.

My daughter is 3 and a half years old. She was perfect, or so I thought. It was after the babysitter rushed out that this all started...

She was a normal kid. I can’t stress that enough. She was cheeky and fun-loving and I had never encountered a single problem with her.

The babysitter came over to look after her one evening so we could go out to eat. We hadn’t had a night off in a while and wanted to have a little date night. It was about 8 o’ clock when we left the house. The babysitter played with her for a few hours and put her to bed at midnight. She watched a movie in the living room, but when she looked at the clock, she noticed the time and told me she had to go. When she stood up, she noticed a piece of paper that had been slipped under the door. She pickup it and read it. She asked if I was the one who wrote it and I told her I had been in bed for hours.

“Do I need to get your husband?”

I said no, it was fine and shooed her away. It was only when she left that I read the note:

“Please come and get me. They aren’t my parents. They’ve been keeping me here and They were going to hurt me. I don’t know who you are, but I think you’re my only hope.

Clare.”

There was no one I knew named Clare. I was sure of it. I discarded it and thought nothing into it.

It was the next evening when I started to feel that something was off. It was about 10pm when it happened. It was dark and the lights in the house were off. My husband and I were in the kitchen, and he was brewing a pot of tea. He broke the silence when he spoke:

“There’s something wrong.”

I shushed him.

“Shh. She’s asleep. Don’t wake her!”

He turned to me and gave me the most terrified look.

“What do you mean ‘she’?”

I pulled myself closer and whispered to him.

“Our daughter.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

My skin crawled. Something was wrong. Why was he speaking like this? Why was he pretending like he didn’t know her?

“Stop It. You’re going to wake her.”

I turned around and walked away. I couldn’t watch him do this any more. He followed me into the living room and I sat down on the couch. He sat down next to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. After a moment of silence, he sighed.

“Listen-“ He paused. “I know it’s difficult sometimes, but you need to accept that she is in fact our daughter.”

I glared at him.

“Don’t you dare pretend that she isn’t! You’re scaring me.”

He stood up and stormed out of the room. I didn’t sleep that night. What was going on? He had never acted like this before...

It was morning. I had gotten maybe an hour of sleep. It was 7.58 when I heard the front door open. I looked through the window and saw my husband leave for work. I shook my head. There was no way he would leave for work without kissing me goodbye. Not to mention, he had no job.

My daughter walked into the room. She was beaming a smile and hugged me tightly.

“Have you ever noticed anything strange, mummy?”

I hesitated. She was my daughter, of course. Why wouldn’t I want to talk to her?

“There *is* something, isn’t there?”

“What are you talking about, sweetie?”

“I know what you are.”

I laughed nervously.

“What are I?”

“You’re the imposter who took my parents. They’re trapped in the attic and you’re just using their bodies.”

I felt a cold chill run down my spine. I stood up, but she grabbed my arms and I felt a cold, hard grip wrap around my wrists.

“I’m not going to let you hurt me, or my parents.”

I tugged at my arms, but she wouldn’t let go. I said nothing. I didn’t know what she was, or what she had done to my daughter, but I knew one thing. I wasn’t going to let her get away with it.

I tugged and tugged until she let go. I ran out of the house and slammed the door behind me. She followed me, screaming at me to come back. I didn’t look back. I couldn’t. I just kept running...
