What caliber should I use?

I will be buying my first handgun ever and it'll be a 1911. That's about it, so what caliber would you all recommend? I've been thinking about .45, but another voice has been telling me the 9mm is a good choice. I've heard the 9mm has a lot of recoil for a 1911, but I'm not sure if that's true.
