$15,000 from home repair costs, 1 week off work, and 4 days with no running water

I’m a 32(f) single homeowner who lives on the coast with my dog in a 1950s house that was built on a foundation. We got a major rain storm on the weekend and it caused my ceiling to collapse on Friday and now my water is shut off because of a burst pipe and I’m currently staying at a hotel. I’ve had other disasters in the past and this is just an update to everything that’s happened and how much I’ve had to pay to get things back to normal. I’ve been sleeping like crap on the air mattress at the hotel but my dog seems to be taking the change better than me. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to go back home. I did have to buy a wet/dry vac, another fan, and a couple of extra dry bags for the wet stuff. My insurance will cover a lot of the damages, but I still have to pay for several things myself, like a new microwave and fridge, and having to miss work and stay in a hotel. I also discovered that my roof is in need of repair but that’s a project for next year.

I went home on Monday afternoon to get a few things from the house and feed my dog and that’s when I smelled the moldy smell and saw the damage to the house. I was able to get everything cleaned up but the floors are buckled from the water damage. I’m guessing that when I get the drywall repaired, they will need to replace the floors afterwards. I went home on Tuesday and discovered that my fridge reeked of spoiled food and the uv light was out on the fridge. I unplugged both the fridge and the microwave because I wasn’t sure when I would return home and I didn’t want anything to catch on fire. I also found out that the water was off in the house because one of the pipes had burst and it “blew a hole” in the wall- the adjuster’s words, not mine. I’m guessing that the burst pipe didn’t make a huge hole in the wall but the wall is still in need of repair.

So here’s a rough list of the expenses I’ve had so far:

About $1700 on hotel stays and I still need to stay here until the weekend

$700 for lost wages from missing work this week

$300 on restaurants and take out for me and dog food for my dog

$700 to replace the fridge and microwave

$300 to replace the drywall and a corner of the ceiling in one of the bedrooms- the other rooms had water damage but it was contained in the main room where the ceiling collapsed

$300 to repair the floors- this is a rough estimate

$1000 to repair the roof- this is a rough estimate

$300 on fans, dry bags, and cleaning supplies

I’m hoping I don’t have to pay more than $4,000 out of pocket but everything is still up in the air because they still need to inspect the roof and the floors. My house is not livable at the moment and I’m hoping that I can go back on the weekend if the floors and walls get repaired but I still won’t have running water and a fridge. My insurance will cover a lot of the repairs but there are still a lot of costs on my part and I’m not sure how much more money I can spend.

Has anyone else had to deal with major repairs and had to temporarily relocate? How did you handle it?
