I was visiting my family of origin with my daughter. My parents are completely aware of my political views. My dad and brother are conservative republicans but my mom is more neutral. While staying there, my dad found out that my daughter had to give up the Disney princess dolls she loved so much when she was little. We did this when she was 3 years old and knowing it was hard for her. We, of course, let her pick out a couple of them to keep but the rest were taken away. It wasn't for any good reason, other than I didn't like them. I thought they were too "feminine" and too "pink". My daughter was very sad to say goodbye to them and we never really played with the ones she kept because I didn't really like them.

We were visiting and I told my dad about my daughter having to say goodbye to her dolls. I told him how I thought they were too oversexualized.

He listened to me, and the next day, he went out to the second hand stores and bought her a whole trunk full of the exact dolls she used to have.

He said it didn't make sense that I took them away because I didn't like them and I don't like her playing with them now. It was devastating to her when she was little and it would mean so much to her if I could let her have them back. He told me I should bring them out and let her play with them again.

I was so touched by his kindness and generosity and love for my daughter. I was so caught up in my own politics and trauma from my childhood that I didn't even think about the impact that it had on my daughter. But he got it. He got that it was cruel to take away something that she loved so much. He understands that she is a child and deserves to be allowed the things she enjoys, and the things that make her happy.

My dad is so cool.
