What would Chambers do in the Zombie Apocalypse?

full disclosure, I am not a very good writer or poet, so it probably won't be the best story, but oh well. Also, I couldn't give Chambers the credit and creativity it truly deserved.

A lot of things go through your mind when you're sitting in your dark apartment, listening to the groans of the dead outside. Your mind wanders, you think of the loved ones you've lost, the good times you had before the world went to shit, and at some point you can't stay in one place, you have to get out and take action.

In the small town I live in, I hadn't seen anybody in days. I thought I was alone until one day I saw a young woman walking down the street, armed to the teeth with a dead cat around her waist to throw the undead off her scent and a large duffel bag on her back. She had her hair tied up in a ponytail and was wearing a pretty beat up sweat suit. As someone who hadn't seen another human being in weeks, she looked perfect in my eyes. When she noticed me, she stopped and clearly was ready to fight. When I approached her, she lowered her bag full of guns and asked if I was okay. I stared at her in awe until I realized she was talking to me. She smiled and asked again, she was surprised that I didn't notice the knife in her hand. We talked for a while and I learned her name was Marcella, or "Marcy" for short, and we were both 16. We wanted to go to the local park and see if we could find other survivors. When we reached the park, we saw a group of 5 people, 2 children, 2 adults, and a teenage girl armed with an assault rifle and a huge backpack. She talked to us briefly, introducing herself as Jess, and told us that they were headed to a military base not too far away and their buddy on Chambers told them they would be safe there. I was excited at the opportunity to have some normalcy, and I didn't want to split up from Marcy, so we tagged along.

The road to the base was long and difficult, we had to shoot our way through packs of walkers, and we even found a dead body of a person with a small child hanging out of a car window. As we walked, I talked to Marcy about what she did before the outbreak, and she told me she was a cheerleader. We talked about what we were going to do after things calmed down, and we were going to date. We even talked about what our kids would look like, but we knew that it was probably impossible for any of us to make it for that long. When we finally reached the base, we were surprised to see that it was overrun as well. Jess told us that according to Chambers, the base would be safe. Marcy pulled out her gun, and shot Jess in the head. She told us that she lied about what Chambers told her, and she led us there so that the kids could have a good place to die. We took the kids and left her to burn and went to the nearest city.

Along the way we found survivors and they tagged along as well. We had 3 children in total, and about 15 able bodied adults. We were finally a family again. When we got to the city, we barricaded ourselves inside a sporting goods store. For the first time in a while, we felt safe. We set up a system for guards and hunters and gatherers. We worked together and we were happy for a minute.

A few days had passed since we settled in, and we had lost a few good people. In those days, I had grown closer to Marcy, and I realized I was in love with her. I told her that, and she told me she felt the same way. We talked about our possible future together, we talked about how we wished we could've dated in high school, and we shared our first kiss.

We knew that we couldn't stay in the store forever, and I knew I couldn't let Marcy go. I gathered a small group of us to go on a supply run. We went to a few houses in the neighborhood and we found a lot of good stuff. We found some useful items from an old man's basement, we even found an abandoned dog that the kids fell in love with, and we found a lot of guns in a bunker beneath a house. As we were about to head back to the others, I told Marcy I had a surprise for her. I took her back to one of the houses we went in earlier, the one we found the dog in. Marcy was confused as to why we were going back, until I opened the back door and we were in a beautiful backyard. There were lights everywhere, and there was a beautiful pool with water that (somehow) wasn't filled with algae. In the center of the backyard, a little ways away from the pool, was a small table set up with a white tablecloth and flowers, and a single lit candle.

I told Marcy to dance with me. There was music coming from a few speakers we had set up, it was an old song that I had found on a phonograph in one of the houses. She smiled and said yes. We danced in the backyard, in the dark, in the apocalypse. We had a perfect night, and we made plans to stay together, and to make it through this thing. We went back to the store, and we told everyone about our engagement. The kids were excited, and the adults were happy. We were all excited for the wedding, and we all had hope for the future.

That night was perfect, until I woke up to Marcy's screams.

I groggily got out of bed to find out what was going on. I stumbled around, trying to figure out where Marcy was. I saw her, she was over by the back wall of the store, and the kids were behind her. I stumbled over and asked her what was wrong, and she showed me why she was screaming. She had pulled up the Chambers app on her phone, and she showed me what it said. It was a post from u/hoobillybilboi, and it said, "I made a story about you guys in the zombie apocalypse. I treated you poorly, made you look stupid, and made you too reliant on me. I made you look worse than you actually are. I'm sorry for my ignorance and naivety, and I hope you can forgive me." I read it and I was confused, there was no reason for this person to apologize to us. Marcy realized we were in a story, and she wasn't okay with that. She kept talking about how we needed to get out of the story and get revenge. She talked about how we were nothing more than characters, and that we were disposable. She didn't shut up, and it was getting worse.

That night was perfect, until I shot Marcy. I took my gun, and I pointed it at her. She looked at me, and she realized what I was going to do. I pulled the trigger, and a cold chill went down my spine. She fell to the ground, and the kids started crying. In that moment, I felt like I betrayed her, and that I was a horrible person.

The next morning, we went out to burn Marcy's body. I took my gun, the same one I shot her with, and shot her dead body in the head. I lit a match, and threw it onto her body, and we stayed to watch her burn. I felt bad for what I did, but I knew we needed to move on. When we got back to the store, we all sat in silence. We were all broken, and we didn't know what to do. I looked at the kids, and I knew we had to keep going. I asked them what they wanted to do, and one of them said we should go to the beach. We all agreed, and we knew we had to keep going. We left the store, and we never looked back.
