My wife was attacked and I'm afraid she's not telling me the truth.

My wife and I bought a house in the mountains last year. It's beautiful and we love the solitude, but there's only one chain restaurant for miles. Thankfully, a little Italian place called Dominico's is just down the road. We've been there plenty of times and they treat us like family. We've been on a first name basis with the owner for a long time now.

I shot my mouth off and told him I'd prefer to let my wife walk home by herself after dinner than to ask him to work an extra hour. I have never been more wrong.

We had some pasta and I had a couple of glasses of wine. I was a bit drunk when we were leaving so I decided to stay behind and sober up for a little while. I figured it was only a mile from where we were eating so she could walk it.

Her hand caressed my face, she smiled, and said, "Don't worry, I'll be fine." She laughed and added, "I walked all the way here, remember?" I smiled and nodded, a little embarrassed. I sat there for nearly an hour when I decided I was good to head home.

I walked the mile back to our house slowly and drunk. I saw some people walking around and they waved and said hello. I got home, and when my wife greeted me at the door, she let out a deep sigh.

"You can't let me walk home alone at night." She told me.

"No. I can let you walk home at night." I countered. Our banter continued for a moment when I said, "I will never let you walk anywhere alone at night." Knowing that I could not protect her all of the time.

As I said that, I noticed a strange look on her face and her body language suggested something wasn't right. Her hair was a mess and her coat looked more disheveled than it should be. I asked her what was wrong. She said she was fine but I could see that something happened on that walk. She wouldn't tell me. I could see tears on the brim of her eyes so I decided to drop it. I didn't want to upset her any further.

So I said "I'm going to bed. You can sleep on the couch if you want me to give you some space." She nodded and I walked up the stairs to the bedroom. She looked back at me and said, "Make sure to lock the front door." I told her that I would and went on my way.

I tossed and turned for what felt like hours. I couldn't sleep and I was worried about my wife. I finally drifted off to sleep after what I thought was roughly an hour.

I awoke to my wife screaming. I reached over to wake her but she wasn't there. I got out of bed and ran down the stairs and found her on the floor, still screaming. I sat on the ground next to her and tried to calm her but she kept shrieking. I held her for a long time and eventually, she stopped.

"How did you sleep?" I asked.

"I didn't." She replied.

"Why did you scream?" I asked.

"I had a nightmare." She said.

But I remember that she screams in her sleep. I figured there was something wrong so I decided to press the issue.

"What happened on your walk?" I asked.

She looked at me in the eye and I could see that there was something she was hiding.

"Nothing. Just a guy walking by. He said hi." She said.

I knew she was lying. I figured that she didn't want to talk about it so I decided to drop it again.

"Do you want to go to Dominico's tonight? Maybe it'll help you forget whatever happened?" I asked her.

"It's fine." She said.

I got up and walked to the front door to check if it was locked. When I reached the front door, I could have sworn I saw a man standing by the tree in our front yard. I looked again but there was no one there. I chalked it up to my imagination.

I got a weird feeling so I walked around the house. Everything seemed normal. I walked back inside and my wife was still on the floor. I asked her if she was ok and she said she was. I didn't believe her so I got up and walked back upstairs.

When I reached the bedroom I got another weird feeling, this time I was certain there was someone in the room. I looked around and there was no one. I checked under the bed and in the closet. I found nothing. I decided that I was being paranoid.

I got back in bed and tossed and turned again. I didn't sleep for a long time. After what felt like a few hours, I finally fell asleep, and almost immediately it felt like I was being shaken awake.

When I opened my eyes I saw a man standing above me, his hand covering my mouth. I tried to scream but his grip was too strong. I tried to fight back but he was too strong. I tried to wriggle free but he held me down.

"Be quiet and I won't hurt you." He said.

Now I know what you're thinking. Why didn't I call the police or get help? I don't know. My best guess is that I was in shock. After a moment, I was able to work up the courage to struggle a little bit more.

There I was, flailing my hands and kicking my legs like a child when he suddenly disappeared. I sat up in bed, still in shock, and turned on the light. I looked around and... there was no one. I got out of bed and looked around the room. I checked under the bed, in the closet, and in the bathroom. I even looked in the warm spot of sunlight coming in through the window.

There was no one.

I must have been dreaming. I woke up, rubbed my eyes, and got out of bed. I walked down to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich. I thought that a midnight snack would help me focus a little bit.

As I was making the sandwich I walked to the refrigerator to grab the jar of mayonnaise. I noticed our magnet that said, "We love Dominico's". I was overcome with an urge to call him and tell him what was going on. Our little Italian place seemed comforting after my night.

So I called him. We talked for a little while. He laughed a little when I told him about my wife walking home. He said he told me so. I don't think he was trying to be mean, I think he was just trying to lighten the mood. He told me that he'd stay on the line if I wanted him to. I told him I was fine and he said he was going to close up for the night.

I hung up the phone and checked the front door again. I walked back to the kitchen and found my wife standing there. She was staring at the back of the house. I asked her what was wrong and she didn't respond. She was frozen in place. I asked her again and she slowly turned her head towards me.

Her eyes were wide and she slowly started to walk towards me. When she was close she leaned in and whispered, "Get the baseball bat under the bed."

I was confused, but I went and got it anyway. I walked back down to the kitchen and handed it to her. She gripped it tightly and walked towards the back of the house. I followed her into the living room and through the window, I saw a man standing in our backyard.

She opened the back door and ran towards him. When she got there she repeatedly swung the bat down on him. He didn't react. I'm not sure if he was dead or just in shock but he did not move. It took me a while to come to my senses but when I finally did, I grabbed her and pulled her inside.

"What the fuck was that?" I asked her.

She looked at me and started to cry. I held her and told her that everything was going to be ok. She kept crying and I don't know what else to do.

So I sat here with her and wrote this. I don't know if I should call the police or not. I don't know if I should tell Dominico. I don't know what to do.

This is the first time I've talked about it. Maybe it'll make me feel better. Maybe I'll feel normal again.

Ok. Well, what now?
