A linguist once said "it's impossible to learn a second language as an adult" but I just learned to speak fluent Japanese in 7 months. Here's what worked.

Hey Reddit.

I wanted to prove that adults *can* learn a second language just as well as a child. It can be intimidating to start, but I've tried a few things that worked really well.

First, I would like to clarify that you should be consistent, patient, and persistent, and that you should be willing to put in the time and effort. It's also important to find the right methods that work for you, such as using a variety of study materials, language exchange apps, games, etc.

Here are seven steps I followed.

Step 1: Set aside one hour each day to study.

*Use apps, YouTube vids, websites, etc. and do the basics like learning the alphabet if needed, basic phrases, etc.*

Step 2: Learn basic phrases and vocabulary.

\*You should learn basic phrases like 'hello', 'thank you', 'excuse me', 'yes' and 'no', etc.*

Step 3: Practice speaking regularly.

*Try to find a language exchange partner, tutor, or use an app and get in the habit of regularly speaking the new language.*

Step 4: Learn correct pronunciation.

\*You can use a variety of resources to learn the correct pronunciation of words, or ask a tutor to help.*

Step 5: Immerse yourself in the target language.

\*Listen to music, watch TV shows and movies in the target language, read books and other materials in the target language, etc.*

Step 6: Practice using the language in context.

*Try to practice using the language in different contexts, such as ordering food at a restaurant, asking for directions, etc.*

Step 7: Be consistent and stay motivated.

\*Language learning is a long process, so try to stay motivated by celebrating your progress, setting achievable goals, and rewarding yourself along the way.*

I used a few apps to learn, like Duolingo and HelloTalk, but often found myself getting tired of them. So I decided to try a new app called Lingodeer. It looks like it's geared at younger learners, but whatever works to learn a new language right? But what really worked well for me was playing video games in the language I was learning. I played games like Dark Souls and Nights into Dreams, and found it to be one of the funnest ways to learn a new language. There are many games translated into just about any language so you can learn a new language through games too. підприємства
