Why did the English never establish a large empire in the Americas?

Faced with the threat of the Spanish empire in the Americas, religious animosity, and a rising England, why did the English never try to establish a large empire across the Americas like the Spanish? I understand that there were various colonies established across North America, but I’m specifically referring to South and Central America.<br><br>Why didn’t English privateers, who had been raiding Spanish colonies for gold and treasure, eventually attempt to establish their own colonies within Central America? For example, Francis Drake raided multiple cities in South America, and never once attempted to establish his own colony for England.
