Why am I the asshole here? Here is my story.

So I have a coworker, let’s call her Mia. We have been friends for about 4 months. We both work at a grocery store & we also both happen to have a bit of a dark sense of humor. That means we usually joke about things like murder, suicide, death and even things like Covid. It’s funny to us because it’s just not something you can joke about with a lot of people. Like it’s not something you can just easily talk about.

Mia is often making suicidal jokes. When we are at work she talks about killing herself, whether it’s we she posts on social media, in front of customers or when we are just in the break room. It’s unproblematic to me. A lot of people make jokes like this.

Anyway, Mia invited me over to her house one night to hang out. I went over and we just talked about random things.

At one point we got on the topic of mental health. Mia has explained she has a lot of problems with depression and anxiety and she even had an attempt in the past. Not much detail but she didn’t go into detail about that so I didn’t ask more about it.

She made a joke about not wanting to live anymore and how she thought about killing herself. I started to ask if she was okay. She told me to stop. She said she was fine and that was just a joke. I asked again if she was okay and she got mad at me. She told me to just drop it.

I shrugged and dropped it. She said she was worried that the topic would upset her nephew and she didn’t want him to hear.

She has a nephew who was also over and he was probably around 10-11 yo. He hasn’t been in the room but he was in the next room.

I told her that I was just asking because she made a post about thinking about killing herself on her Facebook story earlier that day.

She said she was fine and I needed to drop it. She said that I was being annoying about it.

We continued talking for a while and at one point I asked her again if she was okay. She got mad again and told me I need to stop asking.

I told her I was only asking because the topic of suicide was a serious topic. I then reminded her about her nephew and how she told me she didn’t want to upset him so I asked if he was okay.

Her nephew was probably about 6 feet away from us and he heard us talking. He started to cry because he thought something was wrong with her. Mia got mad at me. She told me it was none of my business and I needed to just let her live in peace.

I got mad and told her I was only asking about her because I cared about her. She said she was fine so I didn’t need to ask anymore questions.

I told her she was being annoying and she was starting to make me not want to be friends with her. She said I was being dramatic and that I was making a big deal out of nothing.

I left early because I was fed up. When I got home Mia blew up my phone with text messages. She thought I was blowing things out of proportion and how she doesn’t want to be friends anymore.

I don’t understand why I am in the wrong. I just asked if she was okay because I had noticed she was posting things about being suicidal. I also just asked about her nephew because she told me it was a bad topic for him and she didn’t want to upset him.

Am I a jerk for caring about her and her nephew and asking if they were okay?
