My sugar daddy and I have been together for almost two years. In that time, I have been asked to do all kinds of things in exchange for money, but I have always had fun doing them.

When I was 19 he used to send me money if I wore certain outfits he liked to my high school, and would give me more money to send him pictures of me wearing them.

When I was 20 he used to ask me to get sexts from boys my age and send them to him. I got a thousand dollars for every person I could get to send me nudes or do a certain sex act over FaceTime.

When I was 21 he would give me more money to do that with actual celebrities, by getting them to do my bachelorette party. And when I was 22 he used to pay me to go on dates with men of his choice and do whatever they asked me to do.

But now he has asked me to do something I’ve never done before, something I’ve never even heard of, and I don’t know if I can do it.

We met for coffee and he was wearing a black shirt, black jeans, and black sunglasses. This was unusual because he used to always see me in a white shirt and jeans. He didn’t look up from his phone when I sat down across from him.

“Here’s one million in cash. For services rendered,” he said, tossing me a strap of cash.

“Thank you,” I said.

He tossed me a piece of paper. “Go to this address. Tell them what I told you to tell them and do what they tell you to do. Once you’ve done what you’ve been told, meet me back here and I’ll give you another million.”

I took the paper and unfolded it. It was an address I had never seen before, with a note written on it that read: “I am not a ghost, I am not a clone, I am not a religious icon, I am not something that was never meant to be.”

“Where is this?” I asked.

He gestured to a black limo that was parked outside.

“They’ll take you there. Just give them that piece of paper.”

I got in the limo and gave them the address. They nodded and drove me to the address, and when I got out I saw that it was a big building that looked like a church.

I went inside. I was greeted by a receptionist who was wearing a black robe.

“Hi. I came from Alexander. He said to tell you this.” I handed her the paper.

She scanned it and called someone on the phone. She hung up and told me to go through a door behind her. I went through the door and found myself in a room filled with people wearing black robes.

They all turned to me and started chanting. I covered my ears, not sure of what to do.

An old man walked up to me and held out a gun. “We’re going to have to pull one of your teeth.”

“Why?” I asked.

“You’re going to have to trust us,” he said.

I trusted them.

I opened my mouth and they pulled out one of my teeth.

I screamed in pain.

They put the tooth in a bag and put the bag in a furnace, where it lit on fire and burnt to nothing.

“Now you need to burn your childhood home.”

Again, I trusted them. I took them to the house I grew up in. They threw some gasoline in multiple places and lit it on fire.

I watched as it burned and was overcome with a feeling I had never felt before.

We went back to the building and the old man handed me a small box. “You need to launch this box into space and watch it burn up in the atmosphere.”

I didn’t trust them this time.

“You can’t be serious. How am I going to do that.”

He handed me a piece of paper. “This is the address of a secret government facility. Tell them that Alexander sent you and they’ll let you on board one of the next space shuttles that will leave today. In the box is a special chip. It will let you through all the security.”

We drove back to the limo and gave the driver the address. When I got there I saw a huge facility with astronauts walking in. I was shocked.

I went in and showed them the chip and told them I was there from Alexander. They showed me to a space shuttle.

I got on the space shuttle and was buckled in by a man who said he would pilot it. We blasted off and I felt like I was being squeezed.

When it was over we were in space. He handed me the box. “Launch it.”

I went to a window and launched it. I watched as it hit the atmosphere and lit on fire.

I felt even more overcome with emotion than I had when I burned my childhood home.

I rode the shuttle back to Earth and met the limo. I went back to the coffee shop.

Alexander was still there, but now he was wearing a white shirt and jeans. He didn’t look up from his phone when I sat down.

“Where were you for two months?” he asked.

“I had to go to space.”

He looked up at me. “Who am I?”

“It’s me, Alexander.”

He looked at me with confusion. “Who’s that? Am I your sugar daddy?”

I couldn’t believe he had forgotten. “You are. You’re the one who gives me money.”

He looked at me, dumbfounded. “Why would I do that?”

I couldn’t believe it. He had forgotten after two years?

“Because…” I failed to finish my argument.

He leaned in. “Listen, if you need money then I can give you a job. I know a good one that pays well.”

“I don’t need a job. I’ve been your sugar baby for two years. Please remember.”

He laughed. “You must be mistaken. You’re not my sugar baby. Hell, I’m not even single.”

I couldn’t believe any of this. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my pictures. I showed them to him one by one. Picture after picture of us, picture after picture of me doing things he’d asked me to do.

He looked at each one and shook his head. “Nope. Don’t remember that. Nope. Don’t remember that. Nope. Don’t remember that.”

But when he saw a picture of me launching the box into space, he stopped.

“Is that…?”

“Yes! You were there. Do you remember?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he stood up and walked away.

I stayed at the coffee shop for quite a while, but he never came back.

I went to my friend Sierra’s house.

“Sierra, you remember Alexander right?”

“Who’s that?”

I was stunned.

“Alex. My sugar daddy.”

“Nope. Don’t remember him.”

I didn’t know what to say.

She looked at me. “If you need money I can give you a job. I know of one that pays well.”

I didn’t answer. I went back to my apartment.

I knew what I needed to do.

I went to the building. The receptionist greeted me. “What can I do for you?”

“I was here two months ago. I saw you. I need to see the people who were in that room.”

She called someone on the phone and told them I was there. They told her to send me to the same room.

I entered it. They all turned to me. A new figure stepped forward. It was a woman.

“Why did you come here?”

“I need to know what I am. I need to know what’s going on.”

She smiled. “We are the door. And you… are the key.”
