Actively Refute Yourself When You Make Mistakes

Hello, fellow language learners.

In recent years, I’ve become more and more aware that correcting myself out loud has a dramatic difference in how quickly I’m able to learn new things and make less mistakes.

Actively out loud telling yourself that you made a mistake and correcting yourself in the moment seems to make all the difference in my experiences. I think that this is because we are so used to speaking English that when we make a mistake in our target language, we need to remind ourselves that we are trying to take something we are used to saying in English and replace it with the target language version.

For example, if you say “how is it going?” Which is super common for English speakers to ask.

Call yourself out on it. Then say the correct sentence in your target language. Even if it’s in private.

Language learning is a game of reinforcing new habits and practices. Is it embarrassing at first? Absolutely, but I think that if you can just put yourself out there, even if it’s in private, you’ll be able to learn a whole lot more than just passively collecting language learning books (although I do love those as well).

Give it a shot. My friend and I started practicing it for the last couple of weeks and have seen a huge difference.
