I 37 F am a dietitian for a pediatrics center and my husband 37 M is a chef so cooking is very important in our careers and our marriage. We have a 6 year old son who has a very auspicious palate. He has never been a picky eater and considering his dads job he is very luck to have had the opportunity to try a lot even for his age. My husband and I cook 18 out of 21 meals a week and one of those 3 is take out. Even with our careers we make time to cook because that’s the life we chose.

Last week I made a big batch of mac and cheese with cauliflower puree mixed in and veggies on the side for his lunch and he ate it. The next day I made chicken nuggets and when I was cutting the chicken I cut the cauliflower with it and he asked me what I was doing and I said I’m cutting cauliflower to make it the same size as the chicken so I can bread it and bake it and it will be a healthy snack and he said yuck I don’t want to eat that. I told him it’s really good and he said no. I told him no worries and made the chicken nuggets without the cauliflower and he ate dinner and had a good night. Now the twist is on Friday he had a gymnastics meet and he was hungry after so my husband and I decided to get him chick fil a. He got chicken nuggets, fries and milkshake. He ate it all and then we came home. After a while he was hungry again and I made him the mac and cheese from earlier in the week and he ate it. He then said remember when you were going to make chicken and cauliflower nuggets together and I was like it’s cauliflower mac and cheese that you just ate. He said but I don’t taste the cauliflower like I do when it’s breaded. I told him that’s because it’s mixed into the cheese.

On Monday I made him the chicken nuggets but this time I mixed cauliflower in with the chicken and made some with just chicken and he tasted both and said they were good but the plain chicken ones were better and I agreed. Fast forward to Thursday I was going to make him mac and cheese again but I was running out of the batch I had made the week before. So I mixed the frozen cauliflower mac and cheese from Trader Joe’s into the homemade one I had left. It was a little different but you could barely tell and he ate it. On Friday he told his dad that I was mixing cauliflower into everything and my husband was like what are you talking about. And he said I didn’t want to tell Daddy but mommy has been mixing cauliflower into everything and I don’t like it. My husband and I both go what are you talking about we feed you healthy food. We don’t buy chicken nuggets or processed foods like that so we don’t understand where he was getting at. He goes on to say he doesn’t like being deceived and wants to make the decision of if he wants to eat something or not. We were both like but we gave you the option to try the cauliflower and you said no. But then you ate it and you liked it so we made it for you so you could have a healthy meal. He’s been living with his grandma this week because we are AHs.
