Raised a good man today

I'm an 8th grade English language arts teacher. I'm 3rd year at this school. My principal is also my department lead. I teach him on C block. I run my classes with a pretty tight ship. My classroom is not for the faint of heart. I do not tolerate disrespect and expect all my students to behave like adults.

Today was a good day. Principal came in to observe during C block. Student, let's call him Sam, was struggling. He was being very difficult and refusing to do what I asked. The principal sat patiently in the back, watching. I took Sam outside to speak with him. Principal came out with us. I explained to Sam that I would not tolerate disrespect and that he had been acting poorly. Sam accused me of being in the wrong. The principal asked Sam if he felt that I had done something wrong. Sam then said, "No, but I don't like it when teachers bother me." The principal then asked," Do you think you should be treated differently than the other students?" Sam answered, "No."

The principal then told Sam that he would be receiving lunch detention for the day and to return to class. Sam returned. I asked Sam if he was going to behave. He said yes. He did. He also apologized for his behavior. The principal offered words of wisdom. "In the real world, people will bother you. They'll bother you when you don't want to be bothered. And if you respond poorly, you'll be fired."

He then shook my hand and said, "Thanks. I'm raising a good man."

It was a good day.
