My brother is the reason why my entire family is falling apart and I couldn’t hate him more

I’d like to preface this post by saying that there is a history of mental health issues on my mother’s side of the family, and both my parents work with disabled people for a living.

My brother is severely autistic and has been diagnosed with ADHD/impulse control issues. He’s just turned 18 and has been reassessed for PIP for the first time as an adult. He’s always been a calm boy, but the last three years he’s been getting increasingly more violent.

I’m 24 and have a three year old son, and my brother has always been fixated on him. One evening last week I was visiting my father and my brother came into the room. He told me how he had been thoughts of drowning my son since he was just a baby. He said he’s always wanted to hurt him. I freaked out, as any parent would, and my dad went to take my brother to my mum.

My dad is from a developing country and has a very traditional view of mental health. He thinks my brother is making it up to get attention and he’s evil for thinking the things he does.

My mum is in complete denial. She thinks that just because my brother has never acted on any violent thoughts or urges he’s not a danger and is just telling the truth.

That’s the problem. My parents are unwilling to acknowledge he’s a danger.

My brother has been taken for a psychological assessment and my parents are convinced that he needs to be involved in the process. I’ve cut myself off from my family entirely. I’m not going to let them sacrifice my child for their numerous delusions of grandeur.

I’ve been off work for two months now as I’ve been having to care for my son because I can’t afford to send him to nursery. I’m out of money, so I’m giving up my younger brother to work.

My mum says I’m doing this because I’m jealous of how much attention my brother gets, but the truth is that I worry so much for my son’s safety.
