When the Portuguese were on their expedition to find a sea route to India, they found the subcontinent and referred to the people there as Indians. That's because there was no country called India back then.

The problem with the word "Indian" is that it was coined during a time when our land was colonized by Arabs and Europeans whose sole aim was to turn us into Christians or Muslims. And the name "Indian" represents that.

Although it doesn't explicitly mean "Hindu," the word "Hindu" is much more representative of the people of sanatan dharma than the word "Indian," because it was coined long before our land was colonized.
