I have taught for over 10 years in low income schools.

I have never had parents try to attack me or dox me.

I have never had parents show up in the middle of the day to yell at me in my classroom.

I have never had parents email me to tell me they don’t want certain books, topics etc.

I have never had parents come to school board meetings to tell me to get my head “back where it belongs” like I’ve recently seen on tiktok.

Today I had a parent come in to complain about the 2nd grade play tomorrow. She was so angry that we would even have a play. She specifically was angry that students are expected to practice listening and sitting for 90 minutes. She wanted her child to just do the bare minimum; sing one song and then leave. She was angry that she had to take time off work to come to school and complain about this “insane decision”.

I just listened.

A student teacher poked her head in and told her I was with another parent but I let her in immediately and explained our reasons for doing the play in a kind manner. I gave her options. I asked her if she wanted to volunteer in the classroom for the play. I thanked her for caring.

She left and apologized for being a “bitch”.
