The driving force behind AI truly is greed

I think it’s interesting to see how the more ‘wealth’ you have access to, the more of the problem AI becomes.

I’ve noticed that the higher-end you go in careers, the more ‘talented’ you are, the more the notion of AI replacing you is feared. I work as an artist for a video game studio, I have talent, years of experience and a good education. I make a good amount of money and the notion of AI is terrifying to me, because the thing that I do best that also pays me well is being taken away.

The inverse of this is that the closer to poverty you are, the more the notion of AI is exciting. I’ve seen a lot of that in this sub; people that are in school, industrial workers and service workers that see AI as an opportunity to escape their hard work. I see this mostly in the poor parts of the world, e.g. people in southeast Asia, most of which live in poverty. They are excited to just have a way out, because to them AI sounds like a solution.

But the problem is that AI takes more than it gives. I have 2 friends who claim to be successfully using AI in their work, one in sound design and the other in hairdressing. They’re both very good at their jobs and they’ve had a lot of luck with using AI as a solution to their problems. They are advocates for it, except one just lost his job because his employer got tired of paying him 180k a year and wants to save money on AI.

The thing that I want to point out is that the reason why AI is so pushed today is because of greed. Not because we as a people want to make our lives better, by ‘freeing ourselves from work’ but because the wealthy see an opportunity to get even wealthier by exploiting the AI boom. But at the end of the day, most of us are just workers on the front lines and the billionaires are the generals that send us to the slaughter so that they can amass more wealth.

I don’t want to be replaced by AI, I want to keep working and living my life. I don’t care about freedom or liberation, I care about being able to live.
