Am I just being cheap? Paying for a perfect stranger to go at a 2AM fast food

So, yesterday at 2am, I was in the drive through.

"Would you like to donate \$1 for a free food for the homeless" I heard.

Sorry, no. But thanks for asking!

And then I get to the pay window and I see an older lady on the phone waving a sign that said "HOMELESS" I've lived in this city all my life. I've never seen anyone panhandle this late. I'm not sure if it was a genuine sign... but she was waving it and she was asking me for spare change. I happily give her \$5.

"I'm giving \$5! Please cancel my order!"

"I'm sorry, sir, but that's against policy. You need to pay before you leave. Your order is already in motion. But thank you for the kindness!"

So I paid for my order, went inside, and said I don't need my order, I'm going to pay for the lady's instead.

The lady ordered a very large meal for herself, and she even asked "I'm sorry, sir, I know I'm asking for free food, but can I add cheese to my sandwich?"

/"Basic economics"/ I don't know if she's really homeless, but at this point I don't really care... 2 cheese slices come out to 50 cents. Costs me 50 cents. She might not even be a real homeless person. I don't know. It's just going to be one more meal if not.

And... I'm not really a Christian (agnostic atheist) but I had a good feeling about this. Now I'm craving fast food, so I get back in line and order another meal! And double down on the cheese, baby!

This all happened in under 10 minutes.

So I get to work, and I tell my coworkers what happened, and they think I'm nuts.

"It was probably a setup. You got scammed and played!"

Was I? Maybe. But the lady was just happy and sincerely thankful. If she was an actress playing a part, she was a good one. But if she was really homeless, I just gave her the confidence that humanity is still good. It's probably nothing in the big scheme of things, but you can't put a price tag on that.

So... Am I just being cheap? Was it just a "set up"?
