Disclaimer: I'm a European who does not know much about the United States beyond what I have learned from the mainstream media and a few documentaries on Netflix, so please take this for what it's worth.

I've been following the US elections from abroad and as a left-leaning European I am horrified by the fact that Donald Trump was elected president of your country, twice.

I have heard a lot of people say that "the US is a divided country" on both sides of the Atlantic, so I wonder if the solution is not to split the US into two separate nations. On one side, you have the red states, and on the other side you have the blue states. They could be separate countries, with Trump as president of the red states (Texas, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, etc) and Biden (or whoever else) as president of the blue states (California, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New York, etc).

Of course, this is a complex problem that would raise questions like what to do with minority groups in swing states, how to manage US institutions, and the fact that cities tend to be blue while rural areas tend to be red.

Nevertheless, I think this could be a solution to the deep divisions that exist within the US, divisions that have been made worse by the COVID pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, and other issues.

So, Americans, please tell me why I am wrong about this.

Edit: wow, this got a lot more attention than I thought it would. Thank you all for your comments and insights, I have learned a lot from them.
