My Father was a stock broker for 30 plus years...He just dropped this bomb on me.

My Father just told me something that floored me. He's been a stock broker for over 30 years working for some big companies like Merrill Lynch, A.G. Edwards and Edward Jones. He's done very well for himself and at 73 he's still going strong! He's a very smart man that knows how to read people and knows how the game is played. I've always had great respect for his mind and always feel like I can learn from him. I had a few questions for him after reading his book "the big short". I asked him today "Dad, do you believe that high frequency trading systems are taking the average investor to the cleaners?" He said "yes". He worked inside of these firms for 30 years. A handful of the most powerful firms have these "high frequency" systems that trade millions of times per second. What does that mean?! These systems trade stocks (that you invested your life savings in) BEFORE your order is even allowed to be placed. We are talking milliseconds here. Now imagine these trades happening millions of times per second. I don't know today's numbers but at the time of the book it was over 80% of all trades were high frequency trades. The book "the big short" is a great read on the subject.
