CMV: If you ever find yourself in the position where you'll die without a transplant, you should be able to buy an organ from a living donor.

The waiting list for organs is staggering. According to the UNOS website, over 100,000 people in the US alone are in need of a transplant. Many of these people will never find a matching donor, and will subsequently die.

If a living person is willing to sell one of their kidneys (or lobe of their liver, etc,,,) to someone in need of a transplant, the government has no business preventing them from doing so.

The black market for organs is a very real thing. A quick Google search will show you that organs are being sold, legally and illegally, in many parts of the world. In the US, however, organ trafficking is completely illegal. The US has also seen a decrease in living donations over the past couple years (2019 was the first time in over a decade that living donations decreased).

A well regulated market would theoretically lead to more people being willing to donate. Many people are willing to donate to people they know, or for selfless reasons. But the risk associated with organ donation is not an insignificant factor. People are more willing to take on risk if they're going to receive something in return. This is why you see so many people willing to donate blood or plasma for monetary compensation.

A well regulated organ market would also cut down on the black market. Organ trafficking is a very real thing. Desperate people are already buying kidneys from poor, undereducated people in other countries. These people are often coerced, and very rarely actually get the compensation they were promised.

There are plenty of other reasons why a free organ market would be better for everyone involved, but I'd rather hear your thoughts than ramble on. Feel free to change my view.

Edit: The "well regulated" part is being completely ignored by a lot of people. If you think the government couldn't stop people from being coerced into doing something, you're crazy. The government is fully capable of stopping all sorts of things, they just don't sometimes.

Edit 2: For those of you commenting about your God given right to your body, etc,, let me tell you this: if you ever need a transplant and can't find a donor, you will do anything to save yourself. If that means flying to a 3rd world country to buy a kidney from someone who probably was coerced, you will absolutely do it. You will believe that you have a right to live, and you will do anything to stay alive. Why not allow someone to happily and willingly do something that can save your life, If you ever find yourself in that position?
