Why does the US have so many poor people? I mean we’re rich aren’t we?

I’m Swedish and live in the US. I’m a bit perplexed why there is so much poverty here. In Sweden you’re very hard pressed to be 100% poor after social services like food stamps, extra money and the like. In Sweden you also don’t pay to see a doctor (yes you pay to see a specialist but once you’re in, there’s no additional fee from most specialists)

I remember the first time I went to a drugstore, I saw a tip jar next to the register, I thought it was a joke. In the US you see them everywhere. I went to a subway store today and they had a tip jar next to the register. The subway here is quite pricey, about $8 for a footlong. But the clerk had a tip jar next to the register. If you order food in Sweden, or from an app (like DoorDash etc) you don’t tip. You pay a Premium for the food and that’s it.

You have a large portion of poor people in the US, then a small portion of very rich people. Sure, you don’t have a lot of people in the US who are starving to death like in some countries, but in Sweden you rarely see people in the streets, the homeless are mostly care for.

I don’t get it, the US is a very rich country, we’re a pretty rich country as well, but I think we manage our distribution of wealth a lot better.
