I woke up to the sound of sirens. My wife and I rushed to the upstairs window and looked out. The fire department had arrived. Two of the firemen were spraying water on the fire, and the others were walking up to my front door.

I quickly ran down to let them in.

“Why are you wearing a bathrobe?”

I was taken aback by their question. “There’s a fire on my front lawn... what are you doing here?”

One of the firemen gave me a weird look. “We got a call saying your house was on fire.”

“I don’t know who called you guys, but there’s a fire on my front lawn.”

Then I heard one of the firefighters behind me say, “Sir, there’s no fire outside.”

That same weird look from the first fireman crossed his face again. I turned around to look where that firefighter was looking from, and sure enough, there was no fire.

“Then why did you guys come if there’s no fire?”

“Like I said, sir, we got a call saying your house was on fire.”

A woman approached me from the back of the group. I could tell she wasn’t a regular firefighter by the way she was holding the clipboard and the strange look on her face.

“Sir, can I ask you some questions?”

“Of course,” was my reply.

“Sir, did you call the fire department?”

“No, like I said, I don’t know who called you guys.”

“Sir, we got nine calls from different numbers saying there was a fire at your house.”

“Nine calls? How is that possible?”

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out, sir.”

As we were talking, I got up to look out that same window I viewed the fire from, and it was gone.

“Where are the police?” I asked. The fire department had left not long after that lady and her people left.

“They’re on their way.”

The police showed up twenty minutes later.

“Officer, can you check the street and neighbor cameras and tell me what you see.”

The cop pulled out his phone and tapped on it a couple of times. When he looked up, he said, “Your neighbors don’t have any street cameras, and yours aren’t working.”

“What? No, they were working yesterday. I saw the video from them yesterday.”

“Sir, your cameras aren’t working.”

“Fine, what did my neighbor’s camera catch?”

He looked at his phone and said, “Your neighbors don’t have cameras.”

I was shocked. I know my neighbors have cameras.

“Sir, is there anything else you need from me?”

I thought for a moment. I don’t want to look crazy. No, I’ll just wait for my neighbors to wake up.

I waited for almost three hours. I had given up. I was going to go to bed when I heard my doorbell ring. I knew who that was.

When I opened the door, my neighbor was standing there.

“Hey, Dave, sup?”

“Not much, Bob.”

That caught him off guard. “What’s going on?”

“You don’t know?”

“No, what are you talking about?”

“Did you call the police?” I asked.

“Yeah, I called the police saying there was a fire on your lawn and your house caught fire.”

“Then why did the police say your cameras aren’t working?”

“What? No, they work fine. I saw the whole thing.”

“Then why did the police say you don’t have any cameras?”

“I don’t know, but that’s not true. I do have cameras. And if you want, you can look at the footage.”

I said yes. He went inside his house to get the footage, and when he came back, he handed me a tablet with the footage pulled up.

The video showed my house with a huge fire on my front lawn. I saw the fire get so big that it caught the side of my house and the roof. I didn’t see any people.

“Where’s the footage of the fire department?”

“I’ll pull it up.” He tapped on the tablet a couple of times, and when he gave it back to me, there was the footage of the fire department putting out the fire on my house.

“Thank you, Bob.”

“Thank you, Dave.”

I shut and locked my door. I ran upstairs and looked out of the window I had looked out of before, and on my front lawn there was a big patch of dead grass and burnt ashes.
