As a medical professional, I’ve seen a lot of unusual things.

I work as a paramedic in a third world country, I’ve been in my line of work for 13 years now, I’ve seen a lot of weird and unexplained things and some of them I remember vividly, like for example, the time when we got a call in the middle of the night about an accident, we rushed to the site and found a young man, bloodied, sitting on the ground, he was wailing so bad that his eyes were red, he kept repeating that he’d lost his baby girl, we searched the area and found the wreck of a car, it was unrecognizable, we found a 1-year-old baby girl in the passenger’s seat, she was already gone, her body turned into a mess of blood and broken bones, the baby was in her car-seat, she never would’ve survived the impact, we took the man to the nearest hospital, he was injured badly, he was bleeding out so we had to give him an emergency blood transfusion, the-Compatible blood type was O-, he kept repeating that he wanted his little girl back.

During the whole time in the ER, he kept wailing, and repeating how much he missed his daughter, he was talking to her, talking to himself, he was in utter despair, I never saw a man in that much sorrow before, he was taken to the surgery room, the doctor came an hour or so later and told us that the man had made a full recovery, he was taken to his room, some nurses stayed with him, they were trying to calm him down, he kept asking for his wife and his baby girl, after a while, some woman in her 40’s came with a teenager girl no older than 17, she was the baby girl’s mother, she looked absolutely terrified, I’m not sure how she took the news of her husband and baby’s death, but she was absolutely heartbroken, she was talking to her husband, trying to calm him down, he wasn’t having it though, he kept asking for his baby girl, the teenage girl tried to calm him down too, she was holding his hand, hugging him and kissing him on his forehead, I never saw a scene that heart-wrenching before.

As a medical professional, it’s easy to get de-sensitized, you deal with the same issues over and over, accidents happen on a daily basis, accidents in which people die, it’s a norm for us, and we deal with death on daily basis, but in this case, this man was absolutely grief-stricken, I can’t describe how devastated he looked, it was an eye-opening moment for me, I realized that sometimes you have to stop and actually realize the severity of a situation, things aren’t always as simple as they look, sometimes, some accidents are so severe, they change a person completely, it was a lesson learned for me, a lesson I never will forget.

Another incident I always remember happened during the civil war in my country, we were called to help the casualties, we went to the war zone, and we saw something horrific, something no man should ever see, a young mother had been shot to death, she was holding her one-year-old baby girl to her chest, as if she was protecting her, the baby was crying so badly, we tried to approach her slowly, we didn’t want to scare her, she was taken to the nearest field hospital, and was given something for the pain, she was taken to an orphanage afterwards.

I remember
another incident very vividly, one night, we were on call when someone claiming to be from the local police called us and claimed that there’s an accident in which 14 people were injured, we rushed to the place, we didn’t find anyone, we were absolutely confused, we called the guy, asking him where he was, he said he was close, I told him that we can’t see him or the accident he was talking about, he said that he was at the site, we found a nearby building and asked if he was there, he said yes, we went there, looking for him, we found a guy in a police uniform, he didn’t have any ID on him, he looked absolutely heartbroken, he kept repeating that 14 people have been injured in an accident, we asked him if he needed help, he said yes, he said he needed an ambulance, we asked him where he needed us to take him, he said to a nearby hospital, we asked how many people were with him, he said 14, we asked him what their condition was, he said that they were in bad condition, he kept repeating that, we asked him if he needed anything, he asked for water, I gave him a bottle of water, I asked him again what his condition was, he repeated what he said before, we asked him to call his superiors, so they tell us what to do with him and the injured people, he said he will in a minute, we waited for half an hour but he didn’t call anyone, I was getting worried that something was off, I asked him again if he needed help, he said yes, and repeated how badly injured the 14 people were, I asked him to show us where they were, he said he can’t do it, we insisted, he kept repeating that he can’t show us, it was an endless loop of him asking for help and us asking where the people were, after 2 hours of back and forth, we decided to call it quits, we looked for his superiors and told them everything, they said they didn’t call any ambulance, and there were no reports of an accident, they were absolutely confused, I told them that the man kept repeating that 14 people were injured, they asked to talk to him, when they did, he repeated what he said to me word by word, they asked me to go with them, they wanted me to describe what happened, I told them everything, it was clear that something was off, they weren’t sure what it was, but I’m pretty sure that the guy was in some sort of delusional state.

I also remember another accident I witnessed, we were called to the site of an accident, it was a very big accident, a lot of people were hurt, and some were even killed, there was a man, laying on the ground, his upper body was badly disfigured, he looked absolutely terrifying, he was taken into the ambulance, during the whole time, he didn’t say a word, he was in a lot of pain, but he didn’t say a goddamn word, he was taken to the nearest hospital, he was taken to the emergency room and an hour later, the doctor came to us and told us that the man’s wife and daughter died, he was absolutely devastated, he cried so badly, he was absolutely inconsolable, it was clear that he needed professional help, but he refused, he was taken to his room, he kept crying badly, he kept repeating how much he missed them, he kept saying how much he loved them, it was an absolutely heart-wrenching moment, I felt absolutely sorry for the man, he was an innocent bystander, he could’ve died as well, but he didn’t.
