YouTube Music wants to charge you for using its service on multiple smart speakers at the same time.

YouTube Music is about to get a whole lot more expensive. The music streamer is introducing new multi-device pricing, which will hit users who make heavy use of smart speakers. If you play music on multiple speakers at once you will be charged for each device, rather than just the account.

The new policy was quietly introduced, and it looks like it will be enforced from July 8. It means that if you play a YouTube premium video on your smart TV and a smart speaker, you will be charged for each device.

This is going to have a significant impact on those who use multiple smart speakers throughout their home. For example, having smart speakers in multiple rooms with voice assistants linked up, so you can control music throughout the house.

Apps like Spotify offer similar features but they don't charge per device. Video streamers, like Netflix, also offer access to multiple devices so it remains to be seen why YouTube has made this move. The company has yet to release a statement about this move, but has confirmed that the change will be rolled out globally.
