The problem with AI is not that it's too good, but that it's too bad.

So often I hear people fretting that AI is getting too good, that it's getting better than human-level, and that might lead to some kind of existential threat. But the reality is that AI is not nearly "too good", it's still too bad.

2 examples of this:
1) Generative search. Some might say that generative search is "too good" because it can return near-perfect responses to almost any question you ask. How can a human compete against this? However, the reality is that generative search is not "too good" at all, and what it actually is is "too bad". Generative search is quite bad because it cannot accurately determine what information is correct or not, and it has no way of knowing what information is relevant to the question asked. With generative search you are required to cross reference everything it returns, and even then you are still left with uncertainty. Generative search might be able to churn out quick results, but does not actually save time, since there is still a lot of work required to verify its accuracy and usefulness.

2) Image generation. Some might say that image generation is "too good" because it can create amazing high quality images at an alarming rate. How can an artist compete against this? But the reality is that image generation is quite bad. It may be able to create high quality images, but it struggles to understand context, and often returns low effort responses or irrelevant responses. For example, if you ask it to generate a logo for a company, it will churn out 30 logos, but sometimes none of them are even remotely relevant. It may struggle to accurately generate images of humans, and often returns deformed or warped images. If you ask it to create a logo for "Totino's Pizza", it will probably just use that exact text for the logo, rather than generate something creative. The truth is that image generation does not save time, because you have to sift through dozens of images to find the one that is closest to what you want, and even then it is not perfect. Generative images might be good for some quick inspiration or to use as a reference point, but they are not a replacement for an actual human.

It's clear from these 2 examples that AI is not "too good", but quite the opposite. AI is still struggling to be good enough to be useful in many situations.
