How do I take my idea to the next level?

I am very new at writing, but I have an idea for a novel that I think could be a good one. The problem is that it feels very low stakes, and cliched. The story is about a teenage girl who is killed, and then wakes up in an alternate reality. I was thinking that this alternate world could be a place that exists between the world of the living and the world of the dead. In this world, the MC could find out new things, and maybe make a friend. She could even go on a quest, or join a village. The problem is that I don’t see a clear path for the story to take, and I don’t want to rip anyone else off. I don’t know what’s next for my MC, or what the end goal should be. Any advice for someone who is just starting out?
