I'm so tired of hearing "We can't afford a kid" but people somehow always seem to have the money

My dad always says that my parents were poor when they had me and that's why my childhood sucked. But they had money to buy a house and fancy car, and somehow were able to afford an expensive vacation every year.

I see this habit repeated all over the place. I know a couple right now who are having a kid, who bought a huge "starter house" before they had the kid. I asked them how they can afford the house, and it's "Oh, it's really hard, but we make it work." Somehow, they were able to afford a huge "starter house", but they won't have enough money for their kid.
