Is data science a career path worth pursuing?

I am trying to decide between data science and data engineering. I have been getting mixed signals as to whether data science is dying. One article says yes, while another article says no. I have also heard mixed signals about data engineering. Some people claim that while data engineering is part of the hype, it has no future. On the other hand, some people claim that data engineering has no future because it is just DevOps and ETL. I am confused. Data engineering is part of the hype right now, so I have no clue how it can have no future.
