How would you improve the genre of "high fantasy" if you were in charge of it?

High fantasy has been a cornerstone of the fantasy genre and literature itself since the early 20th century. On one hand, it has had a lot of really cool ideas and stories that have stuck with us, on the other hand, it has been accused of being formulaic or predictable. For instance, high fantasy worlds tend to have a sort of medieval setting, their magic systems are often vague or loosely defined, their versions of elves tend to be somewhat predictable. This is not to say you can't subvert these tropes, but if every 2nd high fantasy story is a deconstruction of the 20 others, it raises questions about what should be done with it.

So, what would you do to high fantasy if you had the chance to either give it an overhaul or restore it to its former glory? The two main goals of your changes should be making the genre more interesting and giving it more variety, and while it does not have to be historically accurate, it should still feel and look like high/epic fantasy.

cemetarycat, since Mr. Whiskers is a masked bandit
