Here's why your work isn't getting critiqued as much as you think it should be.

It's because you're posting in a chamber meant to be used for constructive critique of writing. If you're posting here without the expectation of being critiqued and then complaining when no one does, you're in the wrong place.

I've been seeing a lot of threads from members complaining that they're not getting the upvotes they expect even when they're giving critiques out. From what I see, people posting here without the expectation of getting critiqued on their own work is a major part of that problem. It's the same as asking a girl to the movies just because you want to get laid- she doesn't owe you anything just because you asked, and she's probably going to tell you that you're a creep.

It's also usually the case that these people aren't familiar with the rules of the chamber, and they're surprised when they get downvoted for low effort or uninformed posts. If you're going to come and post your work for critique expecting people to give you good feedback, you should expect the same in return.

As the sidebar says, "we also conduct criticism as critically as possible. No rudeness, no unhelpful comments."

I think a better approach to this would be to change the title of the chamber since it doesn't fit the spirit of what the community does. If people are only interested in critiques with criticism, then they shouldn't be on a chamber for "writing critiques." They should be on a chamber meant for writing critiques as critically as possible. That's just my two cents. I'll keep my argument brief since I'm not looking to be a voice for the community.

A good rule of thumb that I try to follow:

If you want to get a critique, you should post a critique. If you want to post a critique, you should ask for a critique. If you want to get upvotes, you should give upvotes. So what do you want to happen with your work?

Or as the old saying goes, "You have to spend money to make money."

-Adam
