One slice of apple or one slice of processed cheese on a burger

I found this really disgusting recipe for a cheeseburger in a foodie magazine published by the grocery store (sort of like what you'd find at the checkout at a supermarket) and I'm trying to figure out why this is a thing and not an issue for anyone.

The recipe is basically your standard cheeseburger, except one of the cheese slices replaces the apple slices. Specifically, the burger is topped with apple slices, cheese slice, lettuce and tomato.

I'm trying to understand the thought process. You don't have an apple? Use a cheese slice. You don't have cheese? Use an apple slice. I'm coming across a lot of recipes like this, but mostly with bread slices and crackers. An apple or potato slice is not an equivalent replacement for a slice of cheese, as far as I know. A potato slice is not the same as a corn slice. A chicken slice is not the same as a cheese slice. I'm frustrated that no one is calling this out.
