Why do people insist on referring to creative writing as “writing poetry”? It makes no sense to me at all.

The fact that they are different things seems self explanatory to me. I can’t think of a single other instance where people will refer to something using the name of a subcategory. “Oh yeah I’m gonna be a writer. I’m gonna write novels in my spare time.” “Oh? What kind?” “The good kind.”<br><br>I’ve never seen someone talk about anything like that. I can’t think of a second instance. <br><br>Let me know if you have any.<br><br>Edit: Consider this updated to include playwrights and screenwriters. I’m only looking for examples where someone will refer to a category AND a subcategory. I.e. “I’m gonna go watch a movie, it’s gonna be a romcom.” <br>NOT “I’m gonna go watch a romcom.”
