Why is it so hard for people to not throw trash on the ground?

I just got off work and am walking to the subway station to head home. I’m not even out of the parking lot but I’ve already seen 3 water bottles, a coffee cup, and a chip bag in the bushes and on the ground. This is a normal day.

I live in a large city and it’s not uncommon to see human shit on the sidewalk. I thought it was because homeless people don’t have anywhere to go to the bathroom but I’ve seen people that look relatively okay, or at least aren’t homeless, just piss on the sidewalk.

I’ve only traveled to 4 countries but this seems to be a very American thing. When I was in Thailand I saw people throwing trash on the ground all the time but there were always people who went around to sweep it up so it wasn’t a big deal. In Vietnam it was really clean except for the one lake in Hanoi but even that lake was being cleaned up.

People drive by my workplace and throw bags of trash out their window and into our parking lot. There’s a homeless guy who hangs out there who will sometimes pick up the trash but there’s usually so much it overflows the trash cans.

I just don’t understand why it’s so hard for people to dispose of trash properly. Is it because we as a country are just very lazy?
